What is a bellows pump?

A bellows pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses a bellows device to pump fluid through a piping system. A bellows is basically a type of compressible container with an outlet nozzle. They have been tradtionally used to pump air in applications such as iron smelting and welding, but the same type of device has more recently been used to create high-powered pumps.

How do they work?

A bellows is essentially a chamber that can be expanded or contracted by an external force. Some of these pumps are electric or fuel powered, while simpler types are powered by hand. On one side of the chamber is a valve that allows fluid in but not out. When the chamber is expanded, fluid is drawn in through the valve, and when the chamber is contracted, fluid is forced out through the nozzle.

Where are they used?

They are capable of delivering moderate amounts of water at high discharge pressures, and they have the added advantage of being easily coupled with metering pump mechanisms. They're similar to other types of positive displacement pumps that can be used to create a steady and pulsating flow, and in many cases they can actually outperform devices like piston pumps and diaphragm pumps. The controlled rate of flow and pressure makes them perfect in medical applications and any other uses where the fluid delivery needs to be highly controlled.
