Grundfos America's Director of Regulatory and Technical Affairs Greg Towsley will present a technical paper entitled “Towards the ASHRAE 2020 Vision with an Efficiency Increase to a Pump Product Range” at the 2014 ASHRAE Winter Conference in New York on January 22. ASHRAE is a building technology society with more than 54,000 members worldwide.

The paper addresses the improvement of hydraulic efficiencies of a complete pump product range for pumps used in large buildings. It builds on a 2008 report: “ASHRAE Vision 2020 – Producing Net Zero Energy Buildings,” in which ASHRAE suggested that industry stakeholders, including manufacturers, should assume some of the responsibility for reducing energy consumption in buildings and identified ‘a need for ultra-high-efficiency equipment’ to be used in systems with varying loads and systems.

“It is the responsibility of manufacturers to make every effort possible to increase product efficiencies and positively contribute to reducing the energy consumption of buildings,” says Towsley. “The ability to present how Grundfos proactively meets this challenge through industry-leading technology and product improvements provides the cornerstone of this presentation.”

Towsley’s presentation includes a case study of a pump manufacturer that acquired another pump company in 2006 as part of an effort to expand its solutions portfolio for the U.S. commercial building market. Following the acquisition, the pump manufacturer evaluated one of the new product ranges and discovered that many pump models did not meet internal quality standards. The technical evaluation and performance testing also revealed opportunities for higher efficiency in some pump models.

The presentation will take place January 22 from 8:00 to 9:30 am in the Beekman Room of the New York Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas.
