A Better, Faster Way to Source Pumps

KSB’s LUV Pump for Coal Fired, Solar, and Nuclear Power Plants

As the world’s most experienced manufacturer of super-critical high-pressure pumps for the power industry, it is no surprise that KSB offers the power industry’s best-performing glandless boiler recirculation pump. The company’s LUV pump is recognized by power producers worldwide as the gold standard in high-pressure, high-temperature pumps. Since the pump’s 1955 debut, more than 1,700 LUV pumps have been installed in power plants around the world.

Initially introduced as a solution for boiler systems in coal-fired power plants, the LUV is also ideal for solar and nuclear plants.

Through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and repeated testing, the LUV pump constantly evolves to meet market demands. The company challenges its products’ limits by testing temperature and pressure effects on material and internal clearances, ensuring its compatibility and reliability in environments such as Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), which requires continuous cycling.

LUV pumps are designed specifically for high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and offer versatile and long-lasting performance. Forged (as opposed to cast), the pump features a single-shaft design and a unique wet squirrel-cage motor for a completely leak-proof product. Its lifespan matches that of the plant and includes maintenance and repairs by KSB’s specially factory-trained technicians. Custom installations that optimize pump operations are also available.

KSB supplied six LUV Boiler Circulating pumps to Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, which consists of three units on the border between California and Nevada. It is the largest concentrated solar thermal plant in the USA with a total output of 392 megawatts of electricity –enough to power 140,000 homes. The LUV pumps feature variable speed wet rotor motors and are installed high in the solar towers. The pumps can withstand high pressures and temperatures, in addition to daily starts/stops and temperature transients.

KSB will exhibit several of its products, including the LUV pump, at the 7th annual Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Conference and Expo in Las Vegas, NV on June 26 and 27 at Mandalay Bay Hotel, booth #17.
